chapter IV: CLXXXXVIII

Not quite finished, but it’s edging pretty close to midnight. I’ll finish it next year!
Happy New Year, everyone!

Happy New Year, everyone!
This is great stuff! It’s all going to go boom before we know it!
There’ll be a boom any year now 🙂
About the numbers… Shouldn’t that be CXCIX ?
Isn’t 90 XC ? (because it’s X before C)
In ancient notation, one might just pile on more rather than subtract, for example, IIII for “4.”
And I was enoying stacking up all those letters before they collapse down into CC 😉
Rereading the whole series after catching up with the most recent installments, and I have a question about this strip: Are we supposed to be able to guess what the ribboned/roped thing is that Domitian’s playing with in panels 4 & 5?
A bound slave (or terrified freeman), a decorated pillow, an anime Magical Girl bishi’s hair-ribbons, a nice strip of liquorice candy from the corner store, the reins of a deeply perplexed My Little Pony, a cozy papercraft hobby project, the natron-scented wrappings off a mummified hamster…?
The shape’s indistinct enough I never noticed it the previous three or four times I’ve read through this story, but what could be lines of musculature caught my eye this time and (given our boy D’s habits) are now giving me the heeble-greebles.
Your fan,

Oooooh my. Maybe I should tweak that art. On the other hand, I approve of Domitian giving anyone the heebie-greebies, so perhaps my work here is done.
It’s supposed to be a pillow, and he’s using his big antique necklace as a pacifier. But I’m leaning now toward it being the natron-scented wrappings of a mummified and confused Pony.
Thanks for coming back to the series! I’ll be working on a new installment on Friday 😀
