LXVI: Not-safe-for-Work in Progress

spqrblues_20161210_wipA few days ago I rejected a comic in progress because the anatomy was off (arms all over the place), but since I’d already thumbnailed it out, I’ve decided to finish it. I was experimenting again with layout, and I’d like to follow through on the idea.

Here it is in thumbnails-and-sketches form; click pic to see the whole thing. NSFW for bare bottoms, female chests without nipples, suggestive balloon tail placement, and “what are those hands doing outside the panel borders?” I could make it completely SFW and tame, but this isn’t an all-ages comic and, as I frequently pontificate, it wouldn’t be an issue if the images were merely battlefield slaughter and bloody assassinations. It’s also probably NSFW for being on the topic of “three portraits of using sex to get someone’s attention.” This would work as the alt tag.

The final version will be a wee bit censored, and there will be some tweaks to the balloon placement/flow. I’d have posted this WIP as a bonus on Patreon, where I don’t feel as concerned about little kids meandering by, but I’m still waiting on follow-up from Patreon tech support on technical issues.

Sketch of the day: Felix goes to Riverdale High

For those who don’t follow @spqrblues on Twitter, where I sometimes post works in progress while I’m drawing at the Carmine St. Comics art space, here’s yesterday’s warmup exercise, done on a blank cover variant for a new Archie Comics series featuring Riverdale High’s resident tall-dark-and-handsome villain, Reggie Mantle, as seen through the eyes of his loyal pooch.

I’ll have to get around to adding a real (not Photoshopped) “FELIX” banner to the bottom.

Unarting: a quick eraser test

I went looking in the art drawer for an eraser to undo some proofreading marks on the project I’m finishing up today. I’d have gotten most of these from JetPens for 80¢-$1.50. I probably tossed the others in when buying something else at Dick Blick or at the madhouse treasure trove of Columbia art supplies.

The Sakura & Rabbit Foam are the same eraser in different packaging. Doesn’t look like any there was any manufacturing change, according to my oh-so-highly scientific testing.

I use a Tombow Mono Zero eraser while pencilling because it’s itty bitty and apparently I’m still trying to become microscopic.

(sorry about the so-so photo quality)

Sketch of the day: Hobonichi Felix

This time I’m trying the watercolour brush pens undiluted. So, they’re basically classy magic markers. I don’t believe any of these pens are lightfast (or archival), so a journal that will mostly stay closed is a good use for them.

The date says November, but it’s a December sketch. There are a lot of empty pages in this journal to fill.

Sketch of the day: oh, right, I have a journal

by klio on 7 December 2016 at 12:45 pm

I burned out on keeping up with doing a daily journal, and I’ve decided it’s because I was trying to make it align with the cool ways people typically use their Hobonichi Techo journals and turn them into these splendid objects of beauty. I’ve decided to use the thing again, but for doodling (no matter how loose and sloppy), for sketching poses found here and there, for playing with art supplies and not minding if I do the same exercise over and over. I figure these journal pages can count as a sketch of the day because there’s a little Talicus in there. And a colossal imperial foot.
