Printed out a sheet with multiple iterations so I can play with the markers. The scan isn’t quite reproducing the original, so this will also be an exercise for me in figuring out how to do some colour correction.

Same as yesterday’s, but in colour.
I’m still learning how to use the coloured pencils. Some of the pencils used here are actually the watercolour ones I’m more accustomed to, but I mistakenly used a non-waterproof ink for the black outline. So this wasn’t quite the look I’d intended, but I’m learning as I go.
Today’s tools: Pentel Fude Touch sign pen; pencils are Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolours, Caran d’Ache Pablo, and Caran d’Ache Luminance.

Yes. A few of us in Leg III Cyr have indeed worn socks/udones. The general consensus is that socks commonly were made by naalbinding, as I’m told, similar to knitted but different.
There are a number of finds, Egypt and Vindonissa (A Roman fort in Europe). One example shows socks made very simply with a folded-over sheet of material (like felted wool)
and stitched along the side, sort of like a little “bag” that slips over the foot. Our Optio has a pair like this and swears by them. I happen to have a pair of felted wool from my grandfather that works (they are a forest green color so clashes nicely with the caligae).That’s really all I know about the details of construction. They certainly existed, both the split-toe and the (regular) designs. There has also been a letter found by a soldier thanking Mom for sending him a pair of socks.

It looks better in person than in the scan. I’m thinking I’ll try adding coloured pencils to it.
That’d be 18-year-old Felix with a sock, yes indeed. Soccus, for real that’s a Latin word. The better word for this type of socks in Felix’s time is probably udones, but that just wasn’t as funny….
