Most probably Ursus Arctos Arctos, the Eurasian Brown Bear, whose name means “bear bear bear” in Latin and Greek.

I like how Felix and his fellow milites go straight to what is important: the wine.

Wine and war-stories. Note they compare legions right away. I’ve seen Vietnam vets do the same in my day. When were you ‘in country’ where stationed… Da Nang? What unit? Did you know Colonel Beelezebub???, etc.

I wonder if the veterans would say Judaea in the XV or Judaea in the Apollinaris.

Klio, I think you made a mistake with Felix. AFAIK there wasn’t a IV legio in the Judean campaign. The only roman legions with Vespasian were X Fretensis, V Macedonica, XII Fuliminata and XV Apollinaris. The remainder were local armies and auxilia.

The XV Apollinaris was based on Alexandria, so that should have been Felix’s initial legion before being transferred to the Fretensis. So he should have said “Apollinaris then Fretensis” or “XV and then X.”

What can I say. The 1st. Jewish war is one of my favorite ancient campaigns after Julius Caesar Gallic wars.

That’s an inking error. Felix would never say “IV” anyway. He’d say “IIII.” I believe we established way-back-when that he started in III Cyrenaica and ended with the accountants of X (there were some naughty jokes at the time). His commanders in Judaea depicted in the comic were Vespasian, Trajan Sr., then Titus.

I can’t fit “Apollonaris” in a centimeter of space. Well, I can, but readers wouldn’t appreciate it. It’s my call that once these men know they’re discussing Judaea, the numbers suffice.

P.S. – So far Felix has met (or been in the presence of) Vespasian, Titus, and Trajan. He’s going for a full set of the good ones. Oh, and Domitian.

I have faith Felix will do his best to help with the unfortunate Domitian infestation.

Just give him a few years. Um. 17 years. He apologises for the delay.

I like how they are trying to maintain a gender balance in the cremation fires (at least I think that is what they are doing).

Creepy but practical. Females keep the fire burning strong. Creepy.
