I won’t be sure Felix is finally going to get fed until I see him actually eat.

I guess we’ll have to wait to find out where the “Oh no…” in the third frame is coming from.

Hail Klio: Your minions are very-very glad to see the comic up and running again. Life will become much sweeter by and by… like Fish Pickle Sauce for the mind. DRW

So that Cartouche kinda sorta resembles Alexander the Great’s cartouche, but it has fewer hyrogliphics. Whose is it I wonder???

      There’s an M or an A sound, an N sound, an L and a C???
      I’m really rusty on this!

That’s really close, considering how pixellated the low resolution makes the image! I used to be better at actually translating/transcribing into at last one variety of hieroglyphics, but it’s been a while. In fact, given the examples of different Alexander cartouches, I might revise this one. For now, I’ll leave this here for the fun(?) of further investigations:

        Cartouche

I though that by this time really few people, apart from the priests, knew how to read/write Egyptian hieroglyphs.

              22 December 2018, 2:55 pm | #

That’s true. Felix for sure can’t read it, even if he was born and raised in Egypt.

Apparently in the1st Century the knowledge wasn’t quite as restricted as it came to be several hundred years later. But that’s among Egpytians; it sounds like the Romans looked at hieroglyphic script as they looked at most “foreign” things – a curious but useless oddity best left to those odd foreigners.

So it’s unlikely that Felix would be able to decipher it…but also unlikely that Domitia would think of him as “Egyptian”, so my guess is that she’s doing her femme fatale thing and mocking him gently.

I’ll edit the art at some point to follow the Alexander cartouche model and rearrange the characters to add the E/Y sound:
      hiero-E-Y

I’m always amazed by proper artists. My sister is one, and she will have a piece up fussing over how to perfect it. I’ll be singing it’s praises, to me it looks perfect! (Plus she’s my little sister, her toddler scribblings looked perfect to me). Then she will put in like, three curvy lines and it’s somehow even more perfect!

I guess what I’m getting at is, you take your time. I’m not gonna pretend that I know what it is you do, but it’s your work and it should be perfect to you!

One of the nice things about being able to look at these panels for awhile is noticing details that escaped me previously. Domitian is quite y’all isn’t she? Felix is meant to be 6’ or 6’1”right? The top of her head comes right up near his eyes. A woman of 5’10”-5’11” must have been quite the sight back then! She even has to duck way down for her ladies to help her. Here’s to hoping you are well!

I’ve been drawing her as taller than Domitian (if I remember right! 😀 ) and sometimes enhancing that tall hairstyle by wearing platform shoes, though maybe not platform indoor slippers. Gotta get in a little extra height if you want to stare down our Felix.

I just now (28April2019) realized that Domitia called him Marcus, not Felix. Methinks the lady knows something.

The two of them have definitely crossed a line sometime during the afternoon.

I’ve been drawing some commissioned art over the past couple of months, trying to get my fingers back into drawing fitness again, and the pieces have turned out all right, so I’m hoping I can draw a coherent comic again too. It’s been a fight—I don’t know whether to blame my head or my hands, but they’re both starting to behave 😛

You’re drawing commissioned art? Can you do Decomissioned art, with its wheels taken off, essential elements removed then scrapped for it’s deepest concepts for use in future works, like Jasper Fforde’s Library? DRW
