Sketch of the day: making paint, making doodles
A new green for the ancient palette: Cyprus Green.
A little late, but Happy St. Patrick’s day!
There was a funeral this week, took up a lot of time. I’ll try to have an art day tomorrow and post the next episode.
Ooh these remind me of the Fayum portraits!

😀 I’ve been trying to suggest the Fayum portraits–I’d like to spend some time really figuring out the techniques the artists used for them.
Why use watercolor when you can use the real Roman paint? Tempera is easy to mix and to paint with. http://www.tertiuspictor.de (English pages)
I’m exploring the colour palette at the moment, in a medium I know how to handle. Watercolour is easy to make and is a medium I used to work in a lot, so it’s familiar to me.
My experiments making tempera so far aren’t very successful, and I’m still on the learning curve with using both tempera and wax well. (I’ve refrained from posting any of the really-not-at-all-good tempera paintings I’ve tried so far….)
Except for a rare/expensive pigment like lapis lazuli, I have a LOT of pigment supplies left to experiment with in tempera, encaustic, fresco, etc. etc. 🙂
