    she took off the wifely overdress and loosened her hair.

    Judging solely from the other art in this story, when Calatoria and the Empress went into mourning they loosened their hair and wore it down.

    Can’t speak to the overdress though as both women were well covered.

    Oh, I get that she had an overdress at marriage, I just don’t know if removing it is a sign of mourning or just a sign that she’s no longer married.

        divesting yourself of anythign fancy does sounds like a good general description of mourning clothes in general.
